NEW CASTLE — After a four-hour standoff police arrested a man suspected of killing a woman and beating two others.

Police say they arrested 25-year-old Calvin Young on Wednesday night in New Castle. Authorities allege the suspect shot and killed 21-year-old Carolyn McVehil earlier in the day in nearby Sharon. Investigators say McVehil was shot in the head and two other women were beaten with a handgun.

New Castle police responding to a call about a man barricading himself in an apartment were able to take him into custody around 10 p.m.

BROWNSVILLE — The American Civil Liberties Union is criticizing the unpaid 30-day suspension of a high school teacher for appearing next to a stripper in a picture someone else posted on Facebook.ACLU legal director Vic Walczak said the Brownsville School District's decision is troubling because the bridal shower where the picture was taken was a private event.But school board President Rocky Brashear supports the suspension because the teacher allegedly posed provocatively with the stripper, even though she didn't post the picture. He says other employees who reportedly attended the shower could be suspended if similar pictures of them surface.

NEW KENSINGTON — The parents of a high school student killed in a crash last year have sued saying school officials were wrong to not prevent their son from leaving campus early.Colin Grau, 17, was killed Jan. 21, 2009 when a car driven by a classmate crashed head-on into a pickup truck on Route 366, a few hundred yards from Valley High School.Grau's parents sued the New Kensington-Arnold School District, its school board and some officials saying they all knew the school's closed campus policy was routinely disregarded.
