ZELIENOPLE — The Zelienople Volunteer Fire Department is mourning the loss of two of its up and coming firefighters and a third young man killed when their sport utility vehicle overturned in a lake just off Route 68.

The bodies of firefighters Sam Bucci and Elijah Lunsford, both 18, were recovered by emergency crews Wednesday morning along with a third teenager at the Zelienople-Harmony Sportsmens Club Lake off Ben Venue Road.

Both Bucci and Lunsford were recently promoted to senior members of the department after serving in the junior program.

Bucci, who lived in Zelienople, had been with the department for two years.

Lunsford, who is formerly from Zelienople but moved to Marion Township, Beaver County just weeks ago, was with the department for a little more than a year.

The third victim, Trevor Barkley, 17, of Lancaster Township, was not a member of the department.

All three young men were seniors at Seneca Valley High School.

Two of the young men were pulled from the submerged vehicle by divers from the Beaver Falls Fire Department. The third teen, who police believe had been thrown from the vehicle during the accident, was found hours later by divers from Unionville Volunteer Fire Department's dive team.

Police said the vehicle was found upside down about 40 feet from the road, in 5 feet of water.

The vehicle appeared to have slid sideways off the icy and snow-covered road.

Zelienople Fire Chief Rob Reeb said funeral arrangements are being made by the families and that the department would provide assistance if requested.
