HARRISBURG — Gov. Ed Rendell says the state prison system and the Department of Public Welfare will see the bulk of the nearly 1,000 job cuts if a bill to legalize table games doesn't pass soon.

Rendell released a department-by-department list Monday of the layoffs that will occur if the table games bill isn't on the way to his desk by the end of the week.

Legislative leaders plan to brief their rank-and-file members on progress in their negotiations today. It was unclear Monday evening how much progress had been made. The House Democratic Caucus released a statement saying legislative leaders had "reached a consensus." But a statement from the House Republican Caucus only said legislative leaders were "optimistic" that a bill would be sent to the governor before the deadline.

PITTSBURGH — Bus company officials say a Pittsburgh bus driver is suspended after she left a sleeping first grader on the bus.Officials say Pat Kinnear did not see the boy sleeping on the bus when she dropped off students Monday at Linden Elementary School in Pittsburgh. The boy was found wandering the bus terminal by another driver and returned to school.Kinnear's husband, Terry, manages the bus terminal. He says the Roenigk bus company has suspended her while it investigates. In October, another Roenigk driver was charged with child endangerment after a sleeping kindergartner was left aboard a school bus.Roenigk has offices in Evans City, Sarver, Cabot and Valencia in Butler County and provides transportation to several Butler County school districts.

SHIPPPENVILLE — The cats from Tiger Ranch Cat Sanctuary are with new owners or with rescue groups, humane officials said in a news release.The Pennsylvania Society for Prevention of Cruelity to Animals took the dozens and dozens of cats in March 2008 when they were found in poor conditions. A temporary shelter was opened in Shippenville, Clarion County, but that shelter closed Dec. 31.That group had been seeking homes for those surviving cats.Linda Bruno, owner of Tiger Ranch in Frazer Township, Allegheny County, was charged with seven felony charges for tampering with public records, seven misdemeanor forgery charges and three charges of practicing as an unlicensed veterinarian as well as hundreds of counts of animal cruelty.Bruno pleaded guilty to 12 misdemeanor animal cruelty charges and two other counts of tampering with evidence. Prosecutors withdrew more than 600 other charges.Bruno is scheduled to be sentenced this month.From staff and wire reports
