HARRISBURG — Testimony in the trial of former state Rep. Sean Ramaley ended Wednesday with defense witnesses saying he performed at least some legitimate work as an aide to a senior House Democrat.

But two prosecution witnesses, both of whom helped run Ramaley's 2004 campaign, testified earlier this week that they never saw him doing any legislative work.

Ramaley won the election and served two terms. He was running for state Senate last year when he was charged, and subsequently dropped out of that race.

He is on trial on theft, conspiracy and conflict of interest charges, accused of spending his hours on the state clock working on his political campaign.

The jury is expected to hear closing arguments Thursday and then begin deliberations.

The 34-year-old Ramaley is the first of almost two dozen people facing criminal charges to stand trial as a result of state Attorney General Tom Corbett's investigation into alleged misuse of legislative workers and public resources.

During testimony Wednesday, Genoria "Gee Gee" Nesmith told jurors that she helped train Ramaley at then-Whip Mike Veon's Beaver Falls office. She said he answered phones and helped people at the front counter.

She also recalled that Ramaley, a lawyer, provided legal advice for a woman trying to qualify for a county grant to install a furnace and for a friend of Nesmith's who was trying to reinstate a suspended driver's license.

Janet MacNeil, who also worked in Veon's office, recalled discussing a constituent's unemployment compensation issue with him. She said she worked on several campaigns in the office but never saw Ramaley do so.

MacNeil also testified that office supervisor, Annamarie Perretta-Rosepink, told her that Ramaley's job was to be "dialing for dollars" — making campaign fundraising calls from a back office.
