HARRISBURG — A new state law that makes more young adults in Pennsylvania eligible for health coverage under their parents' plans is now in effect.

The law passed in May and took effect Monday. State officials said it applies to an estimated 15,000 adult dependent children up to the age of 30 who aren't married and have no dependents.

They must live in Pennsylvania or be full-time students and must not have other health insurance. Insurers determine how much to charge for the coverage. While an insurer has to offer the coverage, an employer does not have to include the adult child coverage in the group policy.

WYOMISSING — Thousands of live chickens spilled onto a highway after the truck carrying them overturned.Some of the poultry was killed in the Monday morning accident in Wyomissing. The tractor-trailer was carrying at least 4,500 birds.Video footage of the crash showed crates of fowl scattered all over the road. The ramp from Route 12 to Route 422 remained closed for several hours.

HARRISBURG — A bill to legalize table games at Pennsylvania's slot-machine casinos is nearing a vote.House officials say the chamber could give the bill a preliminary vote today and a final vote as early as Wednesday.However, the measure still requires Senate approval before it can become law, and a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi said there is no handshake deal between the chambers.In addition to legalizing table games, the bill would double to four the number of licenses for miniature "resort" casinos and raise the cap on slot machines at resort casinos.
