Presto's fine effort can't save SRU women from loss
SLIPPERY ROCK — Nikki Presto fiddled with the boom box, trying to find the right song for pre-game warmups.
"I do a little bit of everything," said the Slippery Rock University senior guard.
Presto carried her diversity into the game against Urbana (Ohio) University, recording 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
But even she couldn't help The Rock pull out a victory against the previously winless Blue Knights in a rough 56-48 home loss Monday night at Morrow Field House.
"She's been doing well," said SRU coach Laurel Heilman. "She's been doing well in the transition game. She's been doing a lot of everything for us."
SRU (1-4) led 29-19 at halftime, but Urbana (1-5) started the second half on a 14-3 run to take a 33-32 lead.
Emilee Vitez hit a jumper to get the lead back for The Rock, but Andrea Vogel responded with a layup at the other end for Urbana to give the Blue Knights the lead for good.
Trailing 47-46, The Rock had a chance to take the lead, but Grace Palucis' jumper rimmed out.
"It was disappointing," Heilman said. "I thought it was a winnable game. I feel like we let this one get away."
To make matters worse for Slippery Rock, senior guard Julie Molloy was injured late in the game when she was fouled going up for a layup and landed on her tailbone.
Molloy laid motionless on the court for several minutes before being carried off by trainers
"They are going to take her for some X rays," Heilman said of Molloy, a Grove City High grad and The Rock's leading scorer. "We'll wish the best for her tonight."
Urbana went the entire first half without committing a foul and The Rock didn't go to the line until there was 17:01 remaining in the second half.
"Isn't that bizarre? I don't think I've ever been in a game like that," Heilman said.
Freshman Bethany Caudill led SRU with 11 points.
The Rock won't have long to ponder this loss because it will host Penn State-Beaver Thursday.
"We have to regroup," Heilman said. "It's real good we get to play that quick. We have two days and then we get a chance to bounce back."
