SRU soccer bows in regional
Darko Karamatic scored in the 83rd minute of play to lead the University of Charleston (W. Va.) to a 3-2 victory over Slippery Rock University in the second round of the NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Tournament at Thompson Stadium Sunday.
The Rock (18-4-1) held 1-0 and 2-1 advantages, but the Golden Eagles battled back.
SRU goalie Greg Blum had made a diving stop off Karamatic, but Karamatic put back his own rebound for the win.
SRU's Jeremy Leighton opened the scoring with a goal in the ninth minute off an assist from Patrick Conley. Charleston (19-3-0) tied the game when Drew DeAngelo scored in the 38th minute off a throw by Craig Cantor.
Kenneth Fultz scored off a penalty kick in the 59th minute to give The Rock the lead, but Rob Vincent tied the game when he scored off a Dion Peters pass in the 67th minute.
Women's Basketball
Grace Palucis scored 12 points and Grove City High graduate Julie Molloy added 11 more as SRU (0-1) dropped a 65-55 decision to Tiffin University Sunday.
The game was knotted at 55 with 3:27 left before Tiffin closed out the game on a 10-0 run.
Nikki Presto added seven points and eight rebounds for Slippery Rock, which shot 36.5 percent from the floor (19-52)).
Football
Grove City College (5-5, 4-2 PAC) rallied from a 17-0 fourth-quarter deficit to capture the Mercer County Cup with a 31-24 double-overtime victory over host Thiel College.
In the second overtime, Andrew DiDonato tossed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Luke O'Hara.
Thiel had taken a 24-17 lea din the first overtime. The Wolverines countered with a DiDonato 11-yard touchdown run.
Slippery Rock High graduate Craig Bicehouse kicked a 34-yard field goal to tie the game at 17 with 2:43 remaining.
