If 1 fireplace is good, 8 must be even better

This fireplace warms the family room of the Panei home on North McKean Street. It is one of eight fireplaces in the residence, each with its own unusual characteristics. In addition, the home is decorated with works that Tom Panei has painted or created with stained glass.
Panei home offers variety

Tom and Stacy Panei's house, one of six to be featured Nov. 21 in the Butler County Symphony Association's Holiday Tour of Homes, gives new meaning to the term hearth and home. The three-story dwelling on North McKean Street features eight fireplaces, each unusual in its own right.

To the left of their spacious foyer is a fireplace with green tile that is original to the home.

"My personal favorite is the fireplace in the piano room," said Panei. This room also boasts a baby grand piano and an antique train layout that was his grandfather's.

Lovely garland adorns the mantel of this fireplace with heavy brass frontage that matches the grate.

The Paneis' game room boasts a red brick fire tile fireplace that keeps this room warm and cozy. But one of the most unusual fireplaces in the house is found in the formal dining room.

"I've not seen a fireplace this color before," said Panei of the distressed golden brick.

"I really like how the glass doors on the cabinets flanking the fireplace match the windows in this room," he added.

Fireplaces also are found in the bedrooms on the second floor and even a bathroom that had been sealed but is now an alcove housing a piece of artwork.

In addition to its array of fireplaces, the Panei home is decorated with art they have collected and works that Tom has painted or created with stained glass. Musical instruments adorn the wall on the second floor, some functional and some antiques.

The Paneis also share a love of Elvis, evidenced by the tree in the TV room.

"I decorated this big gaudy white tree with peacock feathers. It is reminiscent of the Peacock Room in Graceland," said Stacy, who holds fond memories of Nashville.

Stacy also said she looks forward to the house tour, especially after decorating.

"It was enjoyable working with my husband in collaborating, and now seeing the finished product is rewarding," she said.

"While it is a lot of work, it will be nice when it is done and the pressure will be off before the holidays begin," she added.

"I'll be able to focus on baking, shopping and wrapping presents."
