LONDON — Two yeoman warders at the Tower of London have been suspended for allegedly bullying a female colleague — the first woman appointed to the post at the royal fortress in more than 500 years.

The Tower of London said today that a third warder was under investigation over the alleged harassment of 44-year-old Moira Cameron.

In 2007, Cameron became the first female yeoman warder. The warders, who patrol the fortress on the banks of the Thames, are popularly known as "Beefeaters" because of the rations of meat they were given during medieval times.

The 35 warders — all ex-military personnel — sport Tudor-style uniforms and guide visitors around the popular tourist attraction. The Tower, founded by King William I in 1066, houses Britain's Crown Jewels and was where three English queens were executed.

The statement from the Tower of London said harassment among its staff was "totally unacceptable" and that an internal investigation was under way.

Cameron's uniform was defaced and "nasty" notes were left in her locker, The Sun newspaper reported Cameron's entry in the online encyclopedia Wikipedia was also tampered with.

Tower spokeswoman Ruth Howlett said she could not confirm the details cited in the newspaper report.
