Businessman buys S.C. glass plant

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Butler businessman Michael Hartley has bought a pattern glass manufacturing plant that had fallen on hard times and closed.

Hartley, owner of the Standard Bent Glass in Connoquenessing Township and Global Security Glazing in Selma, Ala., has bought Coastal Glass Distributors.

Coastal Glass, the name Hartley is keeping, has a long history and reputation as the world's leading manufacturer of patterned glass.

Hartley said he had looked at the company in June. His purchase was completed Monday.

The South Carolina company will help to enhance the product lines Hartley's companies make and add to what he can offer customers, he said.

Standard Bent Glass, which he has owned since 1993, makes bent, bulletproof, architectural and decorative glasses.

Global Security Glazing, owned by Hartley since 2000, makes bullet and fire resistant, detainment/containment, attack/burglary resistant and transportation glass grazings.

Coastal Glass had about 135 employees at its height of recent production. Hartley said he is re-opening the plant with 75 employees and hopes to reach higher numbers soon.

"Having Coastal Glass will make all of the companies stronger, plus I have some great talent in Butler that I will be able to also use in Charleston," he said.
