SAXONBURG — The case against a suspended borough police officer is over.

Borough council Wednesday night accepted the resignation of Erik Bergstrom.

Under an agreement, Bergstrom's resignation is retroactive to May 6, the date he was suspended without pay after being accused of 10 infractions.

The resignation agreement comes more than two months after new evidence surfaced against Bergstrom, the department's officer-in-charge. Since council also discontinued a discipline hearing, the new evidence will not be disclosed to the public or to council.

Mayor Brian Antoszyk, who levied the allegations, did not confirm or deny the new charges were related to the borough restoring information erased from Bergstrom's hard drive on his work computer.

Bergstrom, 42, of Natrona Heights was first placed on a paid leave Jan. 30 while Antoszyk conducted an internal investigation.

Bergstrom was initially accused of 10 infractions, including altering a criminal complaint filed by another officer, influencing other cases, visiting a sex personals Web site from his work computer and falsifying his time sheets.

Borough manager Mary Papik said more than $10,000 was spent on the case against Bergstrom. That includes the cost to retrieve the erased data from Bergstrom's computer.

Officer Curt Suprano remains the acting officer-in-charge. Antoszyk said there are no immediate changes to the status of Suprano or any of the part-time officers.
