LOS ANGELES — The U.S. Geological Survey has reported a moderate earthquake this morning in Central California.

A preliminary earthquake report that had not yet been reviewed by a seismologist said the magnitude-5.1 quake hit at 3:01 a.m. It was centered in a rural area near Sequoia National Park and about 148 miles west of Las Vegas.

Faith Felton, a dispatcher for the Inyo County Sheriff's Department, said no injuries or damages had been reported early this morning.

Geophysicist Randy Baldwin of the USGS National Earthquake Center in Golden, Colo., said a couple earthquakes with magnitudes of about 5.4 have occurred in the area in recent years.
