The VFW and its auxiliary announced the themes of this year's scholarship competitions.The Voice of Democracy scholarship for high school students requires an audio essay on "Does America still have heroes?"The Patriot's Pen contest for students in grades six to eight requires an essay on "When is the right time to honor our military heroes?"Competition begins at the local level and advances to state and national competitions. CRANBERRY TWP — The Cranberry Township Historical Society will host a free educational program on Paul Revere at 2 p.m. Oct. 4 at the municipal building's senior center.Member Thomas Cully will discuss colonial resistance to the British occupation of Boston and the events that culminated in Revere's legendary ride in April 1775.

A "Celebrate Hope" luncheon will be held at noon Oct. 17 at the Butler YWCA to support breast cancer research and education.Doors open at 11:30 a.m. In addition to the meal, each guest will receive a gift basket. There will be a silent auction, door prizes, raffles and more. A medical representative will discuss early detection and prevention.The event is sponsored by the Butler Chapter 45 Order of the Eastern Star. Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.
