BOSTON — Massachusetts could have a new U.S. Senator by the end of the week.

The Massachusetts Senate will likely debate on Tuesday a bill allowing the governor to appoint an interim replacement for the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by the death of Edward Kennedy.

Republicans lawmakers delayed debate today, but said they don't anticipate objecting again Tuesday.

If the Senate approves the bill, it will require a final vote in both chambers on Wednesday before heading to Gov. Deval Patrick. The House gave it initial approval last week.

Patrick supports the measure and could name an appointment when he signs the bill.
