Mars Stock driver wins surprise feature
BUFFALO TWP — Never mind earning an unexpected victory. Randy Hanovick never expected the race.
The Mars driver of the No. 1 Sportsman Stock found victory lane for the first time in his three-year racing career Saturday at Lernerville Speedway.
Hanovick won the eight-lap, nonwinners Stock feature at the Sarver oval, a race not even on the track's schedule.
"(Lernerville general manager Gary Risch) surprised us with it in the pits," Hanovick said. "The race was available to any Stock driver who hasn't won a feature all year.
"Some of the cars were banged up from the earlier feature and couldn't make it for this added race. It was a nice gesture, adding that race. It gave us little guys a chance."
The earlier feature was the 30-lap Sportsman Stock Spectacular on the second night of the track's annual Autumn-Motive Fest.
Hanovick was supposed to be in that 30-lap feature. He finished third in his B-Main, but one of the qualifiers ahead of him scratched.
"I never got the call in the pits or I would have been there," Hanovick said.
He made up for it later.
One of five cars in the special feature, Hanovick drew the pole and led throughout. He beat Saxonburg's Brett McDonald and Creighton's Jim Fosnaught to the checkered flag.
Joe Heinl of Prospect and Jeff Miller of Natrona Heights were fourth and fifth, respectively.
"I held my line and couldn't make a mistake because Brett and Jim were right behind me the whole way," Hanovick said.
Before Saturday, Hanovick had never won a race of any kind. He has finished second to Lernerville Sportsman Stock all-time feature wins leader Joe Kelley twice in heat races.
Hanovick finished 20th in points his rookie season, 15th last year and 12th this year. Because two of the top-10 points finishers weren't there Saturday, Hanovick got to compete in the dash with the other nine cars ahead of him in final points.
He finished eighth in that race.
"It was a thrill to a guy like me just to be in that race," Hanovick said.
Nick Goss of Punxsutawney won the Sportsman Stock Spectacular, ahead of Rusty Martz of Brookville and Bob Lipinski of Pittsburgh. Goss and Martz run regularly at Marion Center while Lipinski won the Sportsman Stock points title at Lernerville this season.
Sean Collins won the 100-lap Enduro race Saturday.
