A 48-year-old man who had barricaded himself in his Bredin Street home in the city was fatally shot by state police Wednesday night after he walked out of the house with a handgun, authorities said.

Keith George Tack, who was locked in an armed standoff with police for three hours, stepped outside about 8:30 p.m., raised a pistol and was shot at by three officers, according to state police.

He died not far from the back door of the yellow duplex where he lived for several years in a first-floor apartment.

Neighbors, even the closest ones next door, seemed to know little else about the man. He was described as the proverbial "quiet man" who waved hello and never bothered anyone.

None envisioned before Wednesday that Tack would be the cause of a siege that would force them out of their homes and turn their neighborhood upside down.
