A former substitute elementary school teacher may go to state prison for 21 to 42 months for sexual misconduct with teens.

In entering an arrangement with prosecutors Tuesday, Matthew Goettler, 25, of Clay Township pleaded guilty to statutory sexual assault, indecent assault and four counts of corrupting the morals of a minor. He also pleaded no contest to another two counts of corrupting the morals of a minor.

In exchange for the plea, which covers all six cases against Goettler, prosecutors agreed to recommend an accumulative sentence of 21 to 42 months in state prison, followed by six years' probation.

As part of his sentence, Goettler would surrender his teaching license; have no contact with the victims; abstain from teaching or coaching minors; and avoid "electric contact" with any minor who is not related to Goettler.

Assistant District Attorney Mark Lope, who prosecuted the case, said in court "electric contact" includes messages sent by computer, cellular telephone and telephone.

Somerset County Judge Eugene Fike, who is presiding over the cases because Butler County judges cited conflicts, said he will schedule a sentencing date after Goettler is evaluated by a member of the state's Sexual Offender Assessment Board.

That board member will be asked, among other things, if Goettler should be declared a sexually violent predator under the state's Megan's Law.
