NORTH EAST — A Detroit man is the 11th person to complete the 24.3-mile swim across Lake Erie to the Pennsylvania shore near Erie.

Randy McElwain, 45, took just 11 hours, 23 minutes, and 33 seconds to swim from Long Point, Ontario, to Freeport Beach in North East Township. The next-fastest time was 11 hours, 53 minutes by an Erie-area man, Josh Heynes, in 2006.

McElwain graduated from Edinboro University. He now works as a manager for General Motors Acceptance in Michigan.

McElwain started training in February by swimming 2.5 miles then adding distance as his training continued.

PITTSBURGH — More than 1,000 Pennsylvania State Police troopers are being sent to Pittsburgh for the G-20 summit.That's nearly a quarter of the state's total number of troopers and one of the largest deployments in the history of the agency.The troopers will make up perhaps the biggest part of a force that also will include out-of-town and out-of-state police.The Pittsburgh Police Bureau has fewer than 900 officers, but officials are hoping to put as many as 4,000 officers on city streets for the gathering of world leaders next month.

PITTSBURGH — Carnegie Mellon University officials said 18 students at the school in Pittsburgh are believed to have H1N1 flu, which also is known as swine flu.The university e-mailed that information to its 10,000 students and is asking any who live off campus and have symptoms to stay away from school until they're cleared medically.Students already on campus with the symptoms are being isolated and treated by the university's medical staff. Those students will stay in isolation until they stop taking fever-reducing medicine and manage to remain fever-free for 24 hours.Professors will be alerted about ill students.
