PITTSBURGH — The University of Pittsburgh said it won't accept an estimated $225,000 bequest from the gunman who committed suicide after killing three women and wounding nine others at a Pittsburgh-area health club.

Court papers of the intended estate gift were filed Friday by the brother and executor for George Sodini, 48. University spokesman Robert Hill rejected the offer Tuesday.

Sodini graduated from Pitt in 1992 and named the school as beneficiary in a 2007 will.

WASHINGTON — Pennsylvania's U.S. senators are asking President Barack Obama to reconsider after the Federal Emergency Management Agency denied a request to aid flood victims.Sens. Bob Casey and Arlen Specter wrote to the president Tuesday. They said in their letter they have heard from many constituents "in desperate need of federal aid to reestablish themselves as viable members of the community."June's severe storms affected Allegheny, Westmoreland, Erie and York counties. Gov. Ed Rendell asked for federal aid, but FEMA denied his request. Rendell is now appealing the denial.

ERIE — An Erie man was upgraded to serious condition nearly two days after falling about 30 feet from a cliff into Lake Erie while trying to find a spot to watch fireworks that capped the city's CelebrateErie festival.Authorities said Richard Tomilin, 59, and his girlfriend were walking along the cliff when he got too close to the edge and fell about 9:45 p.m. Sunday.Tomilin's girlfriend, Jan Jeffrey, 58, said he has a fractured skull, broken arm and broken ribs.Tomilin was at first listed in critical condition at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, before his condition was upgraded Tuesday.
