Drivers make some memories

There is a first time for everything, but these impressive occasions can last a lifetime. Several drivers made personal milestones last week at regional tracks.

• Ed Lynch Jr. became the first Sprint car driver to attain 100 career victories at Lernerville Speedway. Only Bob Wearing Sr. (117) and Lynn Geisler (108) reached the century mark in one division and that was the Late Model class.

• Dan Holtgraver, 19, was thrilled to make his first World of Outlaws Sprint show by qualifying 13th in time trials and garnering a fifth in the heat race at the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup Race. He finished 22nd in the first race and 23rd in the second. After the race, Holtgraver said, "I wish we could've finished a little better, but it was like a dream come true. Just to make the show and to race with those guys was incredible."

• Mike Pegher Jr. is having a banner season, winning at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway Saturday and at Tri-City Sunday. He has become the first area driver to win 14 Crate Late Model main events in one season. Pegher is a developmental driver for Lynn Geisler and currently leads the National Fast Track Late Model points by two over Max Blair. The points-fund winner will be awarded $10,000. This extremely skilled driver will go to Eldora this weekend to compete in a National Crate Late Model race that will pay $5,000.

• Joe Kelley claimed his 30th Lernerville win and now replaces Scott Bochek as the all-time leader of the Sportsman Stock division at the track. "It is so tough to win in this division," Kelley said. "There are so many good drivers and the cars are so equal."

• Russ King won his first career victory at Sharon in the Modified class. Switching his focus to the full-bodied Late Model class in 2008, King finished ninth in points racing in the Western Pennsylvania-based Mid-Atlantic Championship Series. This year, the 20-year-old joined the World of Outlaws Late Models circuit and currently ranks 10th. His mother, Sis, drives his rig across the country as King is working toward Rookie of the Year honors.

• Brian Ellenberger of Butler made his first appearance at Lernerville as an Outlaws regular. He lost his brakes in the first race, which might have cost him the pole position for the second feature, where he finished 22nd after starting in 20th place. Ellenberger is a candidate for the Outlaws Sprint Rookie of the Year honor.

Coming this weekend:

• Lernerville presents the Fab Four plus Scout night on Friday. Scouts in uniform will be admitted free.

• Motordrome Speedway will have half-price admission night Friday.

• On Saturday, the UFo Touring Super Late Models will appear at Roaring Knob for the first time this season. The Mega-Blitz will pay $3,000 to the winner of the 41-lap feature.

• Sharon has a doubleheader featuring Sprints and Modifieds.

• Mercer Raceway Park presents the Bill Emig Memorial Big Block Modified and Sprint race, paying $1,500 each to win, plus Racing for a Cure Night for the American Cancer Society. The racers will get their first chance to drive on the newly installed clay surface.
