The Eagle County League held its baseball playoff meeting Sunday night and the postseason will begin with two best-of-three series beginning tonight. They include:

• No. 5 seed Mars II (15-13-1) at No. 4 Cranberry Township (20-10), 6 p.m.

• No. 6 Harmony (15-14) at No. 3 Freeport (20-9-1), 6 p.m.

Top seed Mars I (25-5) and No. 2 Saxonburg (22-7-1) received a first-round bye.

ROME — Michael Phelps was unconcerned about posting only the second fastest time in morning heats for the 200-meter freestyle at the world championships Monday.Paul Biedermann of Germany beat the swimmer who won a record eight gold medals at last year's Beijing Olympics.Phelps won the final heat, but Biedermann's time in the previous heat was faster.Biedermann won the heats in 1 minute, 45.30 seconds. Swimming his first individual event, Phelps clocked 1:45.60, and Danila Izotov of Russia qualified third in 1:45.86.

BUDAPEST, Hungary — Felipe Massa's health was improving Monday after the Formula One driver communicated passively with doctors, and medical scans provided encouraging signs after surgery on multiple skull fractures.Department of defense ministry spokesman Istvan Bocskai told the Associated Press that Massa was not speaking but that the 28-year-old Brazilian reacted when spoken to and was moving his hands and feet.Massa was in life-threatening but stable condition following surgery on multiple skull injuries sustained during a violent crash in his Ferrari Saturday at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

NEW YORK — Manhattan's district attorney says Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress will have to serve jail time, the New York Post reported.Robert Morgenthau told the newspaper that Burress, who shot himself with an unlicensed gun in November, was willing to agree to serve a year in jail, but prosecutors insisted on two years, the Post said."We've always taken the position that he's going to have to go to jail, whether by trial or by plea," Morgenthau told the Post for a story in Monday's edition.
