PITTSBURGH — The Federal Emergency Management Agency said storm damage from June 17 in two Pittsburgh-area counties isn't bad enough to warrant federal disaster aid.

Allegheny County officials said they will meet with Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency officials today to map out a plan to appeal Monday's ruling by FEMA.

FEMA officials toured several communities in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties to assess flood and wind damage, but determined it didn't qualify as a federally funded disaster.

Thousands of people were left without power and many roads and basements flooded when the storms produced more than four inches of rain. In some areas, the rainfall was the heaviest recorded since remnants of Hurricane Ivan in September 2004.

DAYTON — A coroner said an 88-year-old farmer was killed on his tract in an accident involving machinery.Armstrong County Coroner Robert Bower announced Monday Beryle Lee Calhoun was found dead by relatives Saturday afternoon.The farmer was last seen alive on his property in Wayne Township Friday night.The coroner said the farmer wasn't wearing a seat belt when the skid loader he was driving toppled over while removing tree limbs from a wooded area. When the machine fell over, Calhoun's head and neck were pinned between the rig and a lift attached to the machine.
