BlueSox bludgeon Sliders in 14-0 win

Slippery Rock baserunner Nick Spisak is tagged out at second base by Butler second baseman Sean Gusrang Monday in the BlueSox's 14-0 victory.

While the Butler BlueSox kept lighting up the scoreboard, pitcher Brian Warheit kept the Slippery Rock Sliders off it.

The BlueSox erupted for 14 runs on 13 hits in Monday's Prospect League matchup, plating four runs in three different innings, while the Butler High graduate scattered six hits in a 14-0 romp at Pullman Park.

Warheit (3-1) struck out four and didn't walk a batter in recording a complete game.

"After the first inning, my arm felt terrible," said Warheit. "In the second inning, it loosened up and I just kept pitching."

Warheit threw only 97 pitches, lowering his ERA to 3.74 in the process. He has started in seven of his eight contests, including his fifth appearance against the Sliders.

"I can't say enough about Brian," said BlueSox manager Jason Wuerfel. "In a few outings, he's struggled in the first couple of innings. (Monday) he was throwing strikes and getting first strikes. The defense got him some outs on some hard hits.

"His pitch count was low and that's what you can do with the first strike. It opens up your arsenal and you can do more," he added.

Butler (18-19) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning when Sean Gusrang recorded an RBI single, and an error on a grounder by Jack Healey brought home another run. Ryan McChesney followed with a two-run double.

In the fourth inning, an RBI single by Gusrang and RBI double by Healey sandwiched another Sliders error on a pickoff attempt that scored another run.

When Greg Desantis had a run-scoring single with two outs, the advantage grew to 8-0 and the rout was on.

"I really like our team chemistry 1 through 9," said Wuerfel. "Everyone knows what to do with a bat.

"More and more this summer guys are learning what to do with the wood bat, the plate discipline, taking advantage of what the pitcher gives you," he added.

An RBI triple by Brian Billigen and a sacrifice fly RBI by Gusrang in the fifth inning made it 10-0.

Butler added four more runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by a bases-clearing double by Brett Zurliene.

Sliders reliever J.T. Thomas walked four batters in the frame, which produced a run before Zurliene's shot.

"(Monday), all three facets of the game were there. When you do that, it's easy to manage this kind of group. My job is easy," Wuerfel said.

Sliders coach Chase Rowe was not available after the game.

Butler won for just the fourth time in 11 games against the Sliders this year.
