Rocket shoots for 100th win

Ed Lynch Jr.
Lynch hopes to collect track milestone in Silver Cup event

BUFFALO TWP — The stage is set for Ed Lynch Jr. All he needs to do now is polish off the act.

But it won't be easy.

The longtime Sprint car driver, known for years as the Apollo Rocket, will seek his 100th career Lernerville Speedway Sprint feature win Tuesday night in the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup XVIII.

Friday night's Fab Four racing program at the Sarver track was rained out, but Lynch wouldn't have been there anyway. He is at the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, this weekend, competing in the World of Outlaws Sprint show there.

Lynch beat the Outlaws in 2002 at Lernerville. He had the pole and was in and out of the lead on a few occasions before passing Tim Shaffer on Lap 35 to move in front for good.

"To do it here at home, at a Silver Cup race — this is storybook, absolutely storybook," Lynch said after his win that night.

Lynch had the second fastest qualifying time at the 2003 Silver Cup before the race was rained out.

What will the description be if he pulls off his 100th Sprint win Tuesday?

Only two drivers have compiled 100 feature wins in any division at Lernerville. Former Renfrew resident Bob Wearing Sr. and Cranberry Township's Lynn Geisler have turned the trick, both in Late Models.

Lynch will have two chances to get his 100th win Tuesday as the Silver Cup program has been divided into two 30-lap features for the first time. The two feature winners will receive $15,000 each and the driver with the best average finish from both segments will be crowned the overall champion.

There will be plenty of competition for Lynch Tuesday. Donny Schatz took the Outlaws Series points lead into this weekend and has nine feature wins.

Joey Saldana began the weekend only 22 points behind Schatz and has won 12 features.

Saldana also owns the Lernerville record in Sprint time trials, turning a lap in 12.334 seconds in May 2002.

Jason Meyers and Lasoski have four Outlaws wins while Steve Kinser, last year's Silver Cup champion, has won twice.

Saldana said he likes having two Outlaws features on the same night.

"I think it's a great idea. To do something different for the fans is great," he said in a news release. "It's nice that the Outlaws are throwing a mix into what's going on with our racing to get the fans involved and know that we are trying to put on a good event and make it better for them."

Other drivers commented on Tuesday's Silver Cup program in the same release:

n

Donny Schatz: "We always look forward to going to Lernerville. We haven't been there yet and normally we go there in the spring, so we'll see if that plays out. We normally run pretty decent there and have won the Silver Cup two of the last three years and finished second last year."•

Danny Lasoski: "Gary Risch does a great job out there with the track and it's a different concept, and anything we can do for the fans, I'm all for it. ... We feel real good right now about how things are going."•

Brian Ellenberger: "Lernerville is a track I know well (being a Butler resident). ... There is nothing wrong with getting to race two 30-lap features at a track I know. I have never run that kind of format before, but it sounds like a lot of fun."•

Jason Sides: "It will be something that's different than what we are normally used to. ... I think it's going to be really fun."The pit gate opens at 4 p.m. Tuesday. The grandstands open at 5 and hot laps begin at 6:30. Time trials are scheduled for 7:1., with racing at to start at 8.
