NEW CASTLE — Brett Rinker of Slippery Rock fired a 75, five strokes off the lead, in the opening round of the American Junior Golf Association Junior Tuesday. That score put him into an eight-way tie for 11th place after the first day of the AJGA Junior at New Castle Country Club.

Ryan Prokay of Grove City is tied with six others for 48th place with a score of 80.

In the girls event, Marissa DeCola of Center Township is tied for ninth place with an 84, six shots behind the leader.

Jenna Rinker of Slippery Rock carded an 85 and was tied for 13th place.

The 54-hole event will continue today and Thursday.

PHILADELPHIA — Pedro Martinez has agreed to a $1 million, one-year contract with the Philadelphia Phillies, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press Tuesday.The three-time Cy Young Award winner was in town for a physical, and the Phillies planned to hold a news conference today, according to the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because an official announcement hadn't been made.The 37-year-old Martinez went 5-6 with a 5.61 ERA for the New York Mets last year.
