The Butler County American Legion baseball double-elimination tournament gets under way Monday evening. All games begin at 6 p.m.
Top-seeded Meridian hosts No. 8 seed West Sunbury at Pullman Park. No. 2 seed East Butler hosts No. 7 Zelienople at Speed-O Field, No. 3 Mars hosts No. 6 Cranberry at Callery and No. 4 Butler City takes on No. 5 Center Township at Highfield.
The second round will be played Tuesday with Wednesday serving as a rain day. The tournament will conclude Saturday or Sunday.
Former Slippery Rock University basketball player James Richardson is being sought by police after allegedly killing a college student and pizza shop manager in Greenville, N.C.The 6-foot-7 Richardson, 32, played at SRU from 1998-2000 and was a member of the 1999-2000 team that finished 17-12 and reached the PSAC Championship Game.
SYLVANIA, Ohio — Paula Creamer plans to play in the U.S. Women's Open next week despite a sore thumb.Creamer is resting her injured left thumb after getting two anti-inflammatory shots ahead of the U.S. Open at Saucon Valley in Bethlehem, Pa.Creamer, the defending champion of this week's Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic, withdrew before Thursday's first round because of the thumb. She received a cortisone shot on Monday and another on Thursday and wore a small bandage on it.
DUNEDIN, Fla. — Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit caught five innings of a Gulf Coast League game Friday, the first time he has played since breaking his right wrist April 19.Doumit was hitless in two at-bats with a walk in the first of two scheduled appearances for rookie league Bradenton."I'll play one more game here (Saturday), then go to Indy (Triple-A Indianapolis) for four or five games. Then I will be back up with the team," Doumit said.
