Food, magic, fireworks keep holiday hopping
Butler's Freedom Celebration will take place in Memorial Park on Saturday, culminating in a fireworks display at Pullman Park.
The festival will offer family oriented activities such as children's games, entertainment and food. It starts with a 9 a.m. frog jumping contest.
A silent auction will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and items must be picked up at 3 p.m. The Chinese auction will be next at the Miller Shelter and runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $1 for three tickets and $2 for seven tickets.
At 4:15 p.m., the Chinese auction winners will be called, as well as the winners of the 50/50 raffle and the bicycle raffle.
Miss Smiley the clown will perform at 10:30 a.m. at the children's activity tent, and the show includes bag games and a marshmallow race.
The activity tent will feature children's games from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., including a sack race from 11 a.m. to noon, a watermelon seed spitting contest from noon to 1 p.m. and a water balloon toss from 1 to 2 p.m.
Mr. Frownie, King's Family Restaurant's morose mascot, will give away free brownies between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Popcorn, ice cream and face-painting, a ring toss and a dunking booth will be available all day.
Boccie games will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a bingo game from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Miller Shelter.
The "All American Meal," which includes a hot dog, cookie and a drink for $1.25, will be sold at the Deal Shelter to benefit the Freedom Celebration.
There will be a car and motorcycle show hosted by the Butler Area Street Machine Association Car Club. Registration will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the park parking garage.
The show starts at 12:30 p.m. with DJ "B-Rock" at the Rotary Shelter. Trophies will be awarded at 4 p.m.
Entertainment and musical performances will be at the grassy area between Miller and Deal shelters.
A Taekwondo exhibition will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., followed by the music of The Tamarack Lake Cloggers from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m.
Magician Kevin Kramer will perform between 1:30 and 2:15 p.m., then Occasional Divas take the stage from 2:30 to 3 p.m. The Sharp Edge Barbershop Quartet will serenade guests from 3:15 to 3:45 p.m. and The Calamity takes the stage from 4 to 5:15 p.m.
Abby Abbondanza takes the stage for Pullman Park's inaugural Fourth of July event at 8 p.m. Gates open at 7 p.m.
Finally, fireworks by Zambelli's will be held at dusk at Pullman Park.
Donations by the Butler Eagle, the owners and employees of Kelly Chevrolet, Pennsylvania-American Water, Butler Memorial Hospital, Bronder Technical Services and Hefren-Tillotson are paying for the fireworks.
Freedom Celebration is a volunteer committee that organizes Fourth of July events in Butler.
