SLIPPERY ROCK TWP, Lawrence County — Scheduled programs coming up at McConnells Mill State Park include:

n Whole Grain Goodness, 2 p.m. Saturday and July 19.

Meet in the mill courtyard to participate in a corn grinding demonstration and see grains in action. Park at Kildoo picnic area and allow time to walk down to the mill.

• Art in Nature 2 p.m. Sunday.

Meet the park naturalist at Kildoo picnic area and be ready to design and create your own work.

• iConserve Hike, 10 a.m. July 4.

Meet at the Hell's Hollow parking lot from where the group will take the trail toward Slippery Rock Creek and back, about three hours.

• Hell's Hollow Walk, 2 p.m. July 11.

Join the park naturalist at the Hell's Hollow parking lot for a leisurely paced walk.

• The Big Trees 1 p.m. July 25.

Meet at the parking lot above Breakneck and Eckert bridges for a hike in search of some grand old trees. Wear sturdy shoes and take water.

• Campfire Cuisine 2 p.m. Aug. 1.

Meet the park naturalist in the courtyard beside the old mill. Park at Kildoo picnic area; hike down to the old mill.

• Owl Prowl 7 p.m. Aug. 5.

Join the search for nocturnal surprises on Hell's Hollow trail. Allow 15 minutes to get to Hells Hollow if coming from the old mill. Take a flashlight, wear sturdy shoes and meet park staff at the Hell's Hollow parking lot.

• Wild Teas 2 p.m. Aug. 8.

Meet in the courtyard beside the old mill. Park at Kildoo picnic area; hike down to the old mill.

• Geology & Industrial History, 2 p.m. Aug. 9.

Join park staff for this relatively easy hike to the cascading waterfalls in Hell's Hollow. Meet at the Hell's Hollow parking lot.

• McConnells Mill 17th Annual Heritage Festival, Sept. 26 and 27.

The festival celebrates the operational period of the gristmill, from 1852 to 1928, and costumed vendors will display crafts inspired by this time.

Bluegrass music and free tours of the mill will be offered. A turbine has been installed in the gristmill to demonstrate corn grinding and the machinery that ground the grain.

A Civil War encampment brings history to life, and artisans will demonstrate their skills throughout the festival.

The Portersville-Prospect Rotary Club, aided by several local businesses and nonprofit organizations, sponsor the festival. Admission and parking are free.
