Hoyt exhibit features prints by sculptors
NEW CASTLE — Prints by sculptors headline the new rotation of exhibits at the Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts, 124 E. Leasure Ave.
Sculptor James Myford and his wife Betty of Grove City have been collecting works by other artists for more than 25 years. Intentionally or not, the bulk of this collection is made up of prints by other sculptors including Henry Moore, Jean Arp, Jim Dine and many others — hence the title for the show now on display in the Hoyt's main galleries.
"Prints by Sculptors" will run through July 24. A public reception is planned for 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.
On one hand this collection of etchings, lithographs, aquatints, woodcuts, collages, serigraphs and silkscreens stands quite on its own as a testament to the sculptors' sensitivity to line, shape, color, form, and light in the last third of the 20th century.
On the other hand, the collection provides a foundation for the viewer to discover the source of Myford's inspiration and the resulting influence on his work, as evidenced by an accompanying exhibit of his own work in the Blair Sculpture Walkway.
When compared, many of the pieces in "Prints by Sculptors" share the same organic quality of trees, shells, stones and geologic forms found in Myford's abstract aluminums.
The third exhibit showing now is the contemporary artwork by Art Werger in the Sunroom Gallery.
Werger is a printmaker whose etchings and mezzotints share the study of various art forms while demonstrating the narrative quality of the medium in its own right. He is director of the foundations program at Ohio University in Athens.
All three shows run through July 24.
Regular gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
