New dad happy for breather
Scott and Shanna Mohney were married July 5 at the Oakview Golf Club.
Shanna's son, Brady Shuler, 5, was the ring barrier for his mother and stepfather.
A little more than a month later, the couple were preparing for bed when Scott got some big news: He was going to be a father.
"Whenever you're in the bathroom brushing your teeth and your wife hands you a pregnancy test with a pregnant sign on it, you definitely get a little shaky," said Scott of Butler Township.
He then went downstairs and jokingly asked his mother, Diane, what she thought the pregnancy sign met.
"She didn't say congratulations or anything," Scott said. "She just busted out laughing for about 15 minutes."
Mother's Day this year was supposed to be a relaxing day for Shanna, but her plans changed dramatically when her water broke and the family went to the hospital.
The Mohneys wanted their baby to be born on Mother's Day when Shanna went into labor at 7 p.m., but Scarlett Renee was born at 3 a.m. the next day.
"I think he changed her first four or five diapers" Shanna said. "I don't know if I changed any in the hospital. He changed them all."
Father's Day will be Scott Mohney's first with his stepson and daughter.
"It will be nice to finally have a day for me," Scott said.
He said he remains in contact with his father, Bill Mohney, but does not have a close relationship. The two only speak every few months.
He said he hopes to have a better relationship with Scarlett and Brady.
"It's definitely a special relationship you should have," Scott said. "I guess you learn from mistakes other people have made."
Shanna thinks the dedication Scott shows will continue throughout their children's lives.
"He is very involved with both his stepson and our daughter," Shanna said.
When Scott was young, his father, his two older brothers, Troy and Adam, and he would go golfing for Father's Day.
While Scott does not know what his wife and children have planned for him for Father's Day, he hopes for a day of golfing like he did with his father. However, he will be just as happy with a small, simple gift.
"Maybe I'll get a tie, right?" he asked.
Scott has learned a lot about being a father from watching his two older brothers raise their children.
He thinks some of the most important things for a father are to be patient, love unconditionally and let them grow.
"You've got to let them spread their wings," he said.
Scarlett will be allowed to "spread her wings," but as of this Father's Day, she won't be allowed to date until she is 32 years old.
