Pittsburgh council nips meeting for Penguins parade
PITTSBURGH — Even city finances take a back seat to a victory parade in Pittsburgh.
After ordering Mayor Luke Ravenstahl home from vacation to attend an urgent financial meeting today, the Pittsburgh City Council canceled the session because of the Penguins victory parade.
Tens of thousands of fans lined downtown streets this morning to see their team flaunt the Stanley Cup they brought home after a 2-1 victory Friday over the Detroit Red Wings.
The mayor and city council also want to join in the fun.
So the 1 p.m. meeting to discuss a state-sanctioned plan for Pittsburgh's economic recovery is off.
The plan calls for layoffs and cutbacks several council members oppose. The mayor was to share his thoughts at today's meeting.
