DUBLIN, Ohio — Phil Mickelson plans a brief return to the PGA Tour in time to play in the U.S. Open.

The world's No. 2 player suspended his schedule indefinitely upon announcing two weeks ago that his wife, Amy, has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Recent tests have given them hope the cancer has been caught early, with more tests scheduled.

Mickelson intends to return next week at the St. Jude Championship in Memphis, Tenn., then play the following week in the U.S. Open, according to a person informed of the plans.

HERMITAGE — Nathan Smith, a member at St. Jude Golf Club, fired a 6-under 66 to capture the Tam O'Shanter Open Monday.Smith was one of only two amateurs in the top 25 and shot a steady 33-33 to finish three strokes ahead of Jared Kubenik of Edgewood Country Club and Ty Roush of Riverside Golf Club.Travis Dickson of Treesdale Golf & Country Club and Jody Barrett of Cranberry Highlands Golf Course were among nine golfers who tied for sixth place (71) while Rob McClellan of Butler Country Club tied for 15th place (72).
