Bolland gets wins in 3s
BUFFALO TWP — He's not a hockey player, but Kevin Bolland is piling up hat tricks.
The New Brighton driver of the No. 777 Modified picked up three wins in three nights at three different racetracks last weekend, claiming the feature at Lernerville Speedway Friday and BRP Series wins Saturday and Sunday at Pittsburgh, Pa., Motor Speedway and Tri-City Speedway, respectively.
"That's a rare feat to pull off in any division, from what I understand," Bolland said.
Bolland completed his second hat trick Friday night at Lernerville, starting the BRP Modified Series 30-lap feature on the pole and reaching victory lane again.
"Three straight BRP wins, and next time we race at Lernerville, I can go for a hat trick with three successive wins here," Bolland said. "I'm beginning to like this."
Friday's BRP event was slowed by nine restarts, including six in the race's final 10 laps. Bolland lost the lead briefly to Jeremiah Shingledecker on the sixth lap, but he got it back on a 13th-lap restart.
He maintained the lead the rest of the way.
"It's always lucky to start on the pole, but I didn't have the track figured out right away," Bolland admitted. "I didn't hit the right groove and Jeremiah snuck past me."
What Shingledecker didn't need were restarts and there were plenty of them.
"We just haven't been good on restarts this year," he said. "When you run 20 laps nonstop around the track, it's a totally different race.
"That's what we needed and didn't get."
Rex King Jr. started from the 11th position and finished second. He was alongside Bolland for the final restart on the 29th lap.
"If the race is three more laps or so, I might have gotten him," King said. "Our car was good tonight. I even passed my dad and that doesn't happen very often. He's pretty darn good"
Rex King Sr. wound up fifth. Shingledecker faded to fourth and Slippery Rock's Dave Murdick started third and finished third.
Ed Lynch Jr. continues to finish first on a regular basis in the Sprint division. The Apollo Rocket started 11th, passed pole-sitter Rod George on the 22nd lap and cruised to victory Friday.
The win was his fourth Sprint feature triumph of the season and 97th of his career at Lernerville. He also has five heat wins to his credit in 2009.
"I'm going after that 100th win here hard and everybody down here in the pits knows it," Lynch said.
George held the lead throughout the race before Lynch darted in front of him on Turn 3. George spun out moments later.
Bob Felmlee and Kevin Schaeffer, two other top-five cars in the race, spun out after George did.
"That was driver error on my part," George said. "I was trying to get past some lapped cars and just lost it."
The Late Model feature was stopped after 21 laps because of rain. John Flinner of Zelienople picked up his 40th career feature win at the Sarver track and first this season.
But it came in a bizarre fashion.
Mike Blose was leading the race from, start to finish, but had to pit after his No. 5 car was damaged during a faulty restart on the 22nd lap.
Lap 22 never did get under way as a light rain began to fall harder.
When the race was stopped because of the rain, Flinner became the new leader and was awarded the checkered flag because Blose returned to the pits.
"I feel like this is Mike Blose's victory since we never went green again, but I'll take it if you're going to give it to me," Flinner said.
The Sportsman Stock feature was rained out and will be made up as part of a double feature next week, when the All-Star Sprints and Crate Late Models hit the Sarver oval.
Notes: There were 104 cars in the pits, including 33 Modifieds. ... Brian Swartzlander, who owns 61 career Modified wins at Lernerville, did not race Friday after suffering a concussion last Saturday at PPMS. ... Gary Lyle and Keith Barbara earned their first Late Model heat race wins of the year at Lernerville, but neither placed among the top 15 in the feature. ... Butler's Mike Turner won the Modified B-Main. ... Eli Deshids brought his Sprint car all the way from North Kingstown, R.I., only to finish 19th out of 20 cars.
