SUMMER ARTS EVENTS
Arts groups in the Butler County area are teeming with offerings this summer. Here is a listing of a number of those events, concerts and performances.
ART The Art CenterRun by the Associated Artists of Butler County, the Art Center at 344 S. Main St. will host these events:• Washboard Tony & Frank's Karmacoustic Concert, Friday• The 75th annual Spring Show and Sale continues through June 5. A memorial exhibit of the artwork of Albert Karl Hansen is displayed in the Members' Gallery. "The Green Show" continues in the Mezzanine Gallery.• Superheroes and Villains Posters Art Exhibit, June 19 to July 10, a show open to all artists. In the Members Gallery will be artwork by Tiffany London.• South Beach Art Exhibit, Aug. 21 to Oct. 2, a show open to all artists. On Aug. 21, the Butler County Young Professionals will have a South Beach Networking Party and an AABC Fundraiser. A fee will be charged at the door only for the evening of the South Beach Party.
MUSIC Concerts to Munch ByButler County Symphony's lunchtime Concerts to Munch By will take place from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. Wednesdays from June through Aug. 19, except no concert July 1, all at the symphony office, 259 S. Family Concert Series The Butler County Park and Recreation Department hosts a free Family Summer Concert Series at Alameda Park. Hartwood Acres Hartwood Amphitheater in northern Allegheny County will be the site of mostly free concerts and other arts events all summer. Show dates are July 30 and 31 and Aug. 1 and 2 at the Succop Theater on the campus of Butler County Community College.For more information, call 724-287-4214.<B>Comtra Theatre </B>The Comtra Theatre shows scheduled over the summer at the theater on Route 19 in Cranberry Township are:• "Aida," the musical based on Giuseppe Verdi's Italian-language opera, Friday to June 13.• "Alice in Wonderland," June 19 to July 4.• "Oklahoma," July 10 to 25.• "Nunsense," July 31 to Aug. 15.• "The Wedding Singer," Aug. 21 to Sept. 5.Tickets are $12 for plays and $15 for musicals.Call 724-773-9896 for more information.<B>Freeport Theatre Festival </B>A new historical drama by Rennick Steele will open Freeport Theatre Festival's 20th summer season."Cauldron of Steel" is about immigrants coming to America to work in the new steel mill in Vandergrift, a "worker's paradise" conceived and built by George McMurtry. Of course, there are obstacles to reaching "paradise" of any kind.The play reflects the willingness of people to sacrifice in search of a better life for their families.Performance dates for "Cauldron of Steel" are July 10 to 12, 17 to 19 and 25 to 26. Curtain is 8 p.m.The theater's second production will be Agatha Christie's "The Mousetrap."This whodunit has been running for 56 years during which time more than 23,000 performances have been given."The Mousetrap" will be staged Aug. 14 to 16, 21 to 23, and 28 to 30. Curtain is 8 p.m.Tickets to these shows are $12 for adults and $10 for students and senior citizens.A pre-theater dinner is available at the River Forest Country Club.
