SAN ANGELO, Texas — Slippery Rock University distance specialist Jeff Weiss finished fifth in the 10,000-meter run Thursday at the NCAA Division II National Championships to earn his seventh career All-America honor.
Weiss has been an All-American four times in cross country, three times in outdoor track. The top eight finishers earn All-America honors.
On the women's side, Laura Mucho qualified for Saturday's 3,000-meter steeplechase finals and Freeport graduate Lacey Cochran missed the finals in the 400 meters, finishing 11th with a time of 55.63 seconds.
HERMITAGE — At the Titleist/Foot Joy Pro-Scratch Amateur at Tam O'Shanter Golf Course, Butler Country Club's Rob McClellan and Geoff Patterson, respectively, finished second with a score 65 in the better ball event.The Club at Nevillewood's Gordon Vietmeier and Bill Kunsman captured the event with a score of 64. In the low professional event, McClellan was tied for third with a round of 69.
SLIPPERY ROCK — Eleven Slippery Rock University spring sports athletes were recently honored with postseason accolades.• In softball, Courtney Vincent was named honorable mention All-America by Daktronics for batting .448 and leading the PSAC in steals (34 of 37).• In women's tennis, Kayla Blackburn was named to PSAC-West all-conference honors in singles and doubles play for the fourth consecutive year. Laura Handy was all-conference in singles for the third time and Jessica Hilborn was all-PSAC-West as a doubles player for the first time.• In baseball, Matt Adams was named the National CollegiateBaseball Writers Association regional MVP, his third Atlantic Region Player of the year honor given by different organizations in the past week.Scott Bender, Scott Dunn, Billy Messer and Rich Michalek were all named to second-team ABCA all-region status while Bender, Dunn, Messer, Vince Lloyd and Jacob Oswalt were honorable mention NCBWA all-region honors.
