Floyd Mikesell
April 10, 2009 truly was Good Friday as Floyd Burton Mikesell passed peacefully into our Lord's presence.
The 40-year resident of Sharon Drive in Butler, and for the past 18 years at Passavant Retirement Community in Zelienople, died at 8:15 a.m. Friday at Passavant Center, Zelienople.
His zest for life and loving, caring nature will be missed by all who knew him.
The son of Wallace Israel Mikesell and Clara Jane Hobaugh, he was born Dec. 29, 1915 in Homer City, Indiana County.
His wife of 51 years, Katherine Marterer Mikesell, preceded him in death on June 3, 1998. They were married April 19, 1947.
His son, Richard, and daughter, Mary Louise, also preceded him in death.
He was a member of Seamans Memorial (Lutheran) Chapel, Zelienople, and a former member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church and Christ Community United Methodist Church, Butler.
Over the years, he served our Lord in many ways through these churches and the community.
He was active for many years in the Butler Meals on Wheels.
In April 2009, he was chosen to receive the Sister Edith Fisher Award for his 18 years of humble servant ministry to the Passavant Retirement Community.
Mr. Mikesell graduated from Homer City High School in 1935 and Carnegie Institute Vocational Technical School in 1945.
He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp in Pittsburgh on May 13, 1942, and was discharged as a corporal at Stewart Field, West Point, N.Y. on August 31, 1943.
He was a life member of the Butler City Hunting and Fishing Club and the Butler County Amateur Radio Club. He also was a charter member of Chapter 1296 of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and Butler Tanglewood Senior Center.
Mr. Mikesell was a lifelong avid reader.
He retired from the Butler V.A. Medical Center Engineering Dept. in April of 1978.
He is survived by a son, Robert (Kathy) Mikesell of Butler, and three grandchildren, Jeremy Floyd (Hannah) Mikesell of Bethel, Conn.; Jennine Elizabeth (Peter) Chase of West Palm Beach, Fla., and James Gregory (Jordan) Mikesell of Cranberry Township.
