Fiat CEO to spend week in U.S.

Marchionne

DETROIT - Fiat says Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne is en route to the U.S. and will split his time this week between Washington and Detroit to work out a deal to take a stake in troubled automaker Chrysler LLC.

Fiat spokesman Gualberto Ranieri said Monday that Marchionne will be in the U.S. until Thursday. Then he will return to the company's headquarters in Turin, Italy, for the company's quarterly earnings report.

Fiat and Chrysler have until the end of this month to complete a deal so Chrysler can secure $6 billion more aid from the U.S. government. Marchionne said last week that a tie-up was not certain and that Chrysler's unions needed to make more concessions.

Chrysler has been surviving on $4 billion in government aid since the beginning of the year.
