SLIPPERY ROCK The Slippery Rock University men's and women's track and field teams are ranked among the top 15 in the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division II poll.

The Rock women are ranked No. 3 and lead the Atlantic region with 282.88 points. The Rock men are No. 15 and are fourth in the region with 259.31 points.

ARLINGTON, Tex. Zach Jackson, a Seneca Valley graduate and a member of the Cleveland Indians, made his first appearance of the season Friday, pitching four innings of relief in a 12-8 loss to the Texas Rangers.Jackson, allowed two runs and four hits, but struck out six batters and did not issue a walk.

PITTSBURGH The Pittsburgh Pirates plan to honor three slain city police officers at the team's home opener Monday against the Houston Astros.The Pirates will observe a moment of silence and taps will be played before the game to honor officers Eric Kelly, Paul Sciullo II and Stephen Mayhle, who were shot responding to a domestic dispute on April 4.The Pirates will also wear Pittsburgh Bureau of Police caps during the game and a commemorative "PBP" patch on their uniform sleeves.The Pirates will auction off the game-used caps and uniforms online and collect money at the game for the Pittsburgh Police Fallen Heroes Fund, which benefits the officers' families.

LOS ANGELES Blake Griffin won the John R. Wooden Award as college basketball's top player Friday, only three days after he announced that he would turn pro. Pitt's DeJuan Blair and North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough, two other finalists, did not show up for the ceremony, which was held at the Los Angeles Athletic Club.Griffin, who became the first Oklahoma player to win the award, led the nation with 30 double-doubles.Connecticut's Maya Moore won the women's award, four days after winning the national title and completing a perfect season for UConn.
