Nancy VanWhy

VanWhy

On March 5, 2009, in the late afternoon, a most incredible woman passed from this world. She was born as a twin 73 years ago in Cleveland, Ohio.

In every role in life, she excelled, whether that be as a daughter, a twin sister, a wife, a mother, a mother-in-law, a grandmother, a great-grandmother, a friend, an artist or an antique collector and dealer.

For over three decades, she fought a courageous battle with heart disease; and by fighting as toughly as she did, she gave all of us a precious gift — a multi-generational dose of her love, friendship, wisdom, wit and kindness.

Nancy VanWhy was widely recognized as one of the premier experts on early American antiques. She and Al, her loving husband of 54 years, ran VanWhy's Antiques in Zelienople for over 20 years — which grew to be more than a business — but a gathering place for all who love high quality, early American antiques.

A self-taught and accomplished artist, she captured the essence of people and places through a prism both unique and beautiful. Her best effort was that of wife and mother, where she and Al raised four beautiful children, Bob, Tom, Carol and Pete.

She was a caring, loving, creative, persistent, strong-willed, feisty and determined woman.

Her marriage to Al was one as in a story tale — so strong and so rich — and example of "how it's supposed to be" for her children and grandchildren.

Her passing has left a tremendous void for Al, one now filled by their loving children, their sons and daughters-in-law, their six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

All who knew her and loved her became better people because of Nancy.
