Wal-Mart
Wal-Mart at the Butler Commons is an excellent example of a large organization giving back to the Butler community and the surrounding area.
Wal-Mart participates in several programs as a corporation. The local store, managed by David Barbe, gives to different organizations in the community each year. In 2008, these activities ranged from donations to large and small groups to honoring individual with scholarships and awards.
The Butler Wal-Mart store raised $19,307.83 for the Children’s Miracle Network in 2008 alone. This money goes directly to the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
There is also a Community Grant Program, which allows qualifying nonprofit organizations that affect the public to apply for this particular grant. Some of the 2008 past recipients were the Butler Township Police Department, MDA, March of Dimes and The Center for Community Resources. More than $22,000 was given from this program directly to the Butler community.
There also is $3,000 available for local community contributions. This money is available to those who may not qualify for the larger grants.
Additionally, about $6,000 was give throughout the year to organizations such as Boy Scout troops, Girl Scout troops, schools, youth sports teams and churches.
Wal-Mart also has a scholarship that two graduating high school seniors receive each year.
Every spring students have an opportunity to nominate their favorite teacher for the “Teacher of the Year” award. This honor includes a $1,000 grant for the school and the teacher receives a gift card to be used in the classroom. Nominations are accepted at the Butler Commons Store.
Wal-Mart has a strong philosophy of giving back to the local community. They strive to better Butler and the people’s lives within the community.
