NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Slippery Rock High graduate Jence Rhoads, a sophomore guard for Vanderbilt University, will be part of the Commodores’ march into the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament.
The Commodores (24-8, the No. 4 seed in the South region, will face No. 13 seed Western Carolina (21-11) in an 8 p.m. tipoff Saturday at The Pit in Albuquerque, N.M.
Rhoads, who started in 27 of the team’s 34 games, is averaging 3.8 points, a team-high 3.3 assists and 2.8 rebounds.
NEVILLE ISLAND — Figure skaters Danielle DePolo, 9, and Breelynd Say, 8, of Center Township medaled at the Shamrock Skate recently held at the Robert Morris University Sports Complex on Neville Island.DePolo earned a silver medal in the stroking competition, a bronze in spotlight and finished fourth in music.Say won a bronze medal during the competition.

INDIANA, Pa. — Sam Goettman, a North Allegheny graduate who resides in Mars, was named the PSAC Central Softball Player of the Week for Indiana (Pa.) University.Goettman, who received the honor for the second consecutive week, went 5-for-5 with three home runs, two doubles, eight RBI and four runs scored in wins over Glenville State and Davis & Elkins. Her on-base percentage was 1.000 and slugging percentage was 3.200.
