World Baseball Classic turns teammates into foes
MIAMI — The players from the four World Baseball Classic teams are staying at the same hotel here, and Thursday night, Team USA's David Wright briefly crossed paths with Team Puerto Rico's Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado.
They didn't get a chance to talk, however — and, more specifically, to talk trash.
"I'm going to wait and talk until after we see the results," Wright said Friday at Dolphin Stadium. "We'll see what happens. Somebody will have bragging rights for a long time this season."
The Mets aren't the only team with players on both sides of Saturday night's USA-Puerto Rico game. But they certainly have the most high-profile members, as the middle of their lineup will go at it.
After the WBC's second round kicks off here with a Venezuela-Netherlands matinee, USA and Puerto Rico will face off, with the Padres' Jake Peavy starting for the United States and the Braves' Javier Vazquez pitching for Puerto Rico.
Wright will be joined by Mets teammate J.J. Putz. Alex Cora and Pedro Feliciano play alongside Beltran and Delgado for Team Puerto Rico. "We've got half of our team, I think, over there in that clubhouse," Wright said, smiling.
"We're enemies right now," Beltran said, laughing.
Yankees fans can enjoy seeing Team USA shortstop Derek Jeter play against longtime teammate Bernie Williams for the first time. "I think it's going to be pretty cool seeing him on the other side," Williams said. "I definitely have a scouting report on him."
Wright said he might provide a tip or two to his temporary pitching teammates. Said the third baseman: "If they want to know, I'll give them my two cents' worth. But both of those guys (Beltran and Delgado) are pretty complete hitters."
To the Mets' players, the temporary rivalry provides part of the enjoyment of the WBC. Wright's short-term alliance with the Phillies' Jimmy Rollins and the Braves' Chipper Jones, and Beltran's and Delgado's truce with the Braves' Vázquez (a former Yankee) does, too.
"David's a great guy," Beltran said. "It doesn't matter what happens (Saturday). We're going to see each other real soon. We want to win, but the most important thing is what we want to do with the Mets' organization."
