SRU softball earns 3 victories
The Slippery Rock University softball team tallied three wins on Saturday, defeating Newberry (8-0), Mansfield (7-0) and Barton (9-5).
Lisa Getgen threw five shutout innings in the victory over Newberry.
Shauna Walker gave up no runs on three hits in the second game, while Knoch High graduate Kirsten Brant homered in the win.
Against Barton, Jessica Guzewicz smacked two home runs.
SRU (7-4) will next play at Bowie State (Md.) on Saturday.
The Rock improved its record to 10-4 with an 8-2 win over PSAC rival Mansfield in Florida on Saturday.Senior outfielder Rich Michalek tallied two hits and three RBI to lead SRU's offense, which also received a pair of hits from Slippery Rock High product Billy Messer and a run-scoring double from Grove City High graduate Billy Herman.SRU will take on California (Pa.) in a doubleheader at Washington's Consol Energy Park at 1 p.m. Saturday.Track and FieldSRU senior Laura Mucho won the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase Friday at a season-opening event at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville with a time of 11 minutes, 32.71 seconds.She followed that up with a second-place finish in the 1,500 run Saturday, finishing in 4:43.77.On the men's side, Nick Alouise was second in the javelin with a heave of 190 feet and two inches on Saturday.
