Cochran leads track title run

Freeport graduate Lacey Cochran held off Shippensburg's Erica Hess by .38 seconds on the final leg of the 1,600-meter relay to clinch a thrilling PSAC Indoor Track and Field Championship for the Slippery Rock University women's team, 146-142 over Shippensburg Sunday.

A flip in the final would have been a tie between the two teams. It is the third consecutive title for The Rock and 22nd overall for coach John Papa.

All three Rock relay teams set records. Whitney Hendershot was named Outstanding Field Athlete of the Meet, winning the pentathlon on Saturday and was second in the high jump (1.67 meters).

Men's Track

Jeff Weiss won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:29.93 to help The Rock finish fourth at the PSAC Championships Sunday.

Shippensburg won the event with 134 points, followed by Lock Haven (129) and host East Stroudsburg (120).

Baseball

The Rock belted seven home runs in a 22-4, 25-2 doubleheader sweep over Philadelphia's University of Sciences at Fort Pierce, Fla. on Sunday.

Rich Michalek had a grand slam in the opener and Matt Adams had two homers in the nightcap.

Scott Bender had a three-run homer, Jacob Oswalt a two-run homer to round out Game 1's home runs.

Derek Diruscia added a two-run shot and Adam Jury an inside-the-park homer in the second game.

Billy Messer (Slippery Rock High) had three hits in the first game and Billy Herman (Grove City) added a double.
