SRU gets seventh straight victory

CALIFORNIA — Slippery Rock University's men's basketball team won its seventh straight game Wednesday night, posting a 66-59 victory at California (Pa.).

The win lifted The Rock (19-7, 10-3) into position to clinch a home court game for the first round of the PSACplayoffs with a win Saturday over Indiana (Pa.).

Denell Stephens paced Wednesday's win with 14 points, 16 rebounds and two blocked shots. Junior guard Maurice Douglas scored 19 points, hitting five treys.

Michael Evans Jr. chipped in with 13 points — including three treys — and Maron Brown had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Senior point guard Kyle Camper broke the PSACsingle-season assist record. His eight assists Wednesday give him 279 for the season. The former conference record was 273.

A Rock win over IUPSaturday would give SRU's men their first 20-win season since 1990-91.

The Rock also maintained its No. 10 ranking in the NCAADivision IIAtlantic Regional, the first time SRUhas been asmong the top 10 in the regional since the early 1990s.

Awin over sixth-ranked IUPSaturday could put SRUinto the NCAADivision IITournament. The top eight teams in the region gain berths.

California (women) 76, SRU55 — The Rock saw its three-game winning streak snapped by the third-ranked Vulcans.Junior wing player Chere' Marshall paced SRU(11-15, 6-7) with 16 points and junior guard and Grove City High School product Julie Molloy added 14 points.The Rock remains in sole possession of fourth place in the PSACWest and can clinch a playoff spot with a win over No. 17 Indiana Saturday or a Clarion loss at Edinboro.California (23-3, 12-1) clinched a share of the PSACWest title with the win and will host SRU or Clarion in a first-round playoff game Tuesday.The Rock-IUP doubleheader Saturday is at Morrow Fieldhouse. The women's game is at 1 p.m., the men's game at 3 p.m.
