Stimulus could add thousands of Pa. jobs

HARRISBURG — The White House estimates that Pennsylvania stands to gain 143,000 jobs from the nearly $800 billion economic stimulus bill pending in Congress.

The estimates were released today by the White House as more details come out about the final legislation agreed to by the White House and Congress.

Pennsylvania stands to gain the sixth-most jobs in the country. State officials say it is still unclear how much money Pennsylvania will get from the stimulus bill, although Vice President Joe Biden estimated Wednesday that it would be $16 billion.

The stimulus bill includes help for the jobless, as well as billions for infrastructure projects and ailing state budgets.

Pennsylvania has lost more than 75,000 jobs since the national recession began more than a year ago.
