PITTSBURGH — The National Aviary, 700 Arch St., will present the following programs this winter and spring:

• Party with the Penguins! on Jan. 19 — In celebration of Sidney the penguin's first birthday, the aviary will offer free admission and special penguin encounters and activities throughout the day.

Visitors will have the opportunity to sing happy birthday to Sidney and learn about the aviary's new open-air penguin exhibit, Penguin Point, currently under construction. Educational presentations also will provide information on practical ways to support international African penguin conservation efforts and protect the environment.

• Little Peepers "Fly the Coop" Days, at 10:30 a.m. Mondays and Tuesdays in January — Children ages 2 to 5 will enjoy a story time that includes a craft project and an up close encounter with the aviary's silkie chickens. Adults and children will have a chance to ask questions of the aviary's trainers and take pictures.

Following Little Peepers, guests can enjoy a full morning of kid friendly activities that includes interactive feedings and a chance to meet the patients at the aviary's bird hospital.

• In the Pink Flamingo Day, Feb. 14 — Half price admission will be offered to guests wearing pink. Meet the aviary's trio of baby flamingos: Beaker, Piggy and Sweetums.

• Animal Training 101, 10 a.m. to noon March 14 — In this introductory workshop, participants will learn about the training that goes into the complex behaviors that birds display in the indoor and outdoor FliteZone bird shows.

Cost is $18, which includes aviary admission. Space is limited and reservations required.

• Wearin' o' the Green (Feathers), March 17 — Kids young and old can participate in an interactive scavenger hunt to find the National Aviary's green birds. Upon completing the scavenger list, guests will receive a take home gift.

• Egg Day, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 11 — Bird encounters, the chance to learn surprising and unusual facts about bird eggs, and visits with the Easter Bunny are planned.

• Green Week, April 18 to 25 — A full week of "green" activities are planned to celebrate groundbreaking for the National Aviary's new FliteZone theater and $23 million expansion.

The schedule includes Enrichment Day on April 18, Seeds-a-Plenty on April 19, Monday is Green Day on April 20, Artsy Tuesday! on April 21, April Showers bring May Flowers on April 23, What's That Smell? on April 24, and Party for the Planet on April 25.

Also planned is free admission on Mother's Day, May 10, for mothers and grandmothers and on Father's Day, June 21, for fathers and grandfathers
