DETROIT — Florida Atlantic has played eight seasons of major college football and already has a winning streak in bowl games.

Rusty Smith threw for 307 yards and two second-half touchdowns to help the Owls beat Central Michigan 24-21 in the Motor City Bowl Friday.

Florida Atlantic began playing in the Football Bowl Subdivision in 2001 but has won both its postseason games. The Owls defeated Memphis last year in the New Orleans Bowl.

WEST POINT, N.Y. — Cal Poly's Rich Ellerson was hired as Army's football coach Friday, joining a team that hasn't had a winning record since 1996.He replaces Stan Brock, who was fired Dec. 12 after a pair of 3-9 seasons. This season concluded with a 34-0 loss to Navy.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Rick DiPietro returned to the New York Islanders' lineup Friday, starting against Toronto after missing 27 games following his second knee surgery in five months.Coming off surgery on his right knee in June, DiPietro had appeared in only three games this season, the last a one-period stint against Carolina on Oct. 25. He had arthroscopic surgery on Oct. 31 to repair a torn meniscus, but the Islanders wouldn't reveal which knee was injured.The Islanders beat the Maple Leafs 4-1 to end a 10-game losing skid.

OTTAWA — James van Riemsdyk and Drayson Bowman scored two goals each for the United States, who opened the world junior hockey championship with an 8-2 rout of Germany on.Minnesota's Jordan Schroeder had a goal and three assists, and Colin White of Boston University added a goal and set up another. Van Riemsdyk, chosen No. 2 overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in last year's NHL draft, is a sophomore at the University of New Hampshire. Bowman is a forward with Spokane of the Western Hockey League.Matt Rust, of Michigan, and Tyler Johnson, Bowman's teammate with Spokane, also scored. Mitch Wahl chipped in two assists. Thomas McCollum, of Guelph in the OHL, made 16 saves for the win.Canada also got off to a good start with an 8-1 win over the Czech Republic in the final game.
