HARRISBURG — Environmental and conservation groups are opposing Gov. Ed Rendell's plan to divert money from state parks and forests to fill a budget deficit.

The groups said Wednesday that the $174 million Rendell wants to transfer will hurt efforts to protect Pennsylvania's natural areas.

They also say that hurts the state's tourism industry.

The money is a windfall from lease payments allowing five exploration companies to drill for natural gas on publicly owned land in northern Pennsylvania.

NATRONA — A man has been stabbed inside a Pittsburgh-area bar less than 24 hours after another man was fatally shot outside it.Allegheny County detectives are investigating both incidents at Granma's Inn, a tiny bar in the Natrona section of Harrison Township. The bar is along the Allegheny River, about 20 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.Police say a man was stabbed twice in the bar about 10 p.m. Wednesday. His name isn't being released and he was treated at a local hospital.Police say 32-year-old Jerico Jones, of New Kensington, was shot outside the bar just after midnight Wednesday.

ALLENTOWN — A former middle school principal who pleaded guilty to selling crystal methamphetamine from his office has been granted parole.Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole spokeswoman Lareun Taylor said Wednesday John Acerra will leave prison Feb. 28 and be released to an inpatient drug treatment center until he completes the program.The 52-year-old Acerra pleaded guilty to selling drugs from his office at Nitschmann Middle School in Bethlehem, where he was arrested in February 2007.Acerra was sentenced to two to four years in prison.
