PITTSBURGH — Chuck Tanner, the former Pirates manager who led the Pittsburgh baseball team to the World Series in 1979, said a $10,000 ring was stolen off his finger while he was sleeping in Jameson Memorial Hospital.

Tanner, 80, said the gold and black opal ring was given to him in 1972 by a former owner of the Chicago White Sox. He reported the ring stolen Tuesday.

Police said they are checking local pawn shops for the ring.

Several phone calls to the New Castle Police Department were not answered on Friday.
